J&J was founded by Robert Jacobs and Ed Jordan in 1961. They agreed on the name J&J since it included both of their names. Ed Jordan left the company in 1963 and the name stuck. Presently, Bob Jacobs is retired, and his sons, Robert jr., and Daniel are business partners running the shop. The whole family has worked there at some point including six sisters and one other brother.
